The Robot Group was founded in the Spring of 1989 by a small group of Austin, TX artists and engineers who shared a common vision: utilizing technology to provide and explore new mediums for art. Through the synergy of fusing art and technology, The Robot Group has stimulated the public into a playful interest in high technology, and art now has new vehicles for effecting culture. The Robot Group has attracted a diverse audience of young and old, tech and non-tech alike. Each with the curiosity to see the artful gracefulness with which man and machine can create new worlds. The Robot Group has attracted national and international, recognition. The Group's activities have inspired articles in Newsweek, Mondo 2000 , boing-boing, FringeWare Review as well as appearances on ABC's Good Morning America and an episode of Invention on the Discovery Channel. Other TV appearances include the debut episode of Art Brigade, and the German program Kulture Report.

Dorkbot

The Robot Group was out in full geek-force to attend Dorkbot in November. We have pictures here and here! This event was extra special as we were able to show the progress of the RoboSpinArt machine. The machine had just been a concept and a buch of scribbles at a previous meeting and now it was ready to sling paint. We had LOTS of bots out and lots of Robofolk showed up to help and join in the fun.
Austin Childrens Museum
The Robot Group was invited to the Austin Childrens Museum to provide educational entertainment for visitors. We brought along the Babbling Head, Eggbot, the Thereping units and other assorted bots. THe kids enjoyed playing the therepings and the Babbling Head's Sea Shanties, as always were a big hit. Ricks Eggbot was busy drawing intricate shapes on eggs using CAD and stepper motors. Fun and fascinating stuff for kids and adults. We even got a Certificate of Appreciation!
Eeyores Birthday Party
SXSW Frontier Fusion
The Robot Group was invited to perform at South by Southwest Music festival for the EFFAustin and Creative Commons. With the Black Knight and Eyebot dancing to the folks playing the therepings, we put on quite a show! :) The folks from Geek Entertainment TV were there and they documented the event on video.
The creation of the Thereping
For First Night Austin 2005, The Robot Group was commisioned to create The Robot Theremin Band. In response the "Thereping" was created to allow non-musicians to play music. Each Thereping instrument contains a small computer that makes sure that the performer cannot play a wrong note or play a note at the wrong time. A complete article documenting the creation of the instrument was published in Nuts and Volts magazine in April 2005.
